The Jordan Hotels Association affirms the role of the hotel sector in reducing food waste

Amman - Jordan

Representing the Jordan Hotels Association Mr. Mohammed Al-Qassem a  board member of the Association, participated in the event announcing the results of three national studies measuring food waste in Jordan. The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Sa’eb Khreisat, as part of a panel discussion entitled “Opportunities and Next Steps.”

During the session, Al-Qasem highlighted the pivotal role of the hotel sector in efforts to reduce food waste, noting that hotels in Jordan consume significant quantities of food. He emphasized that the recent study findings, which revealed approximately 3,739 tons of food waste in 2024, underscore the urgent need to improve food management practices within hotel establishments.

Al-Qasem explained that food waste in hotels is influenced by several factors, including standard operating practices, recycling capabilities, and food preparation planning methods. He stressed the importance of enhancing staff training and awareness, as well as implementing practical solutions to achieve tangible reductions in food waste.

He added that the Jordan Hotels Association is working to guide hotel employees toward adopting sustainable practices in food and resource management, encouraging adherence to best practices for waste reduction. The Association also supports national and private initiatives aimed at raising awareness of food security and sustainability, and promotes cooperation between the hotel sector, government entities, and civil society to effectively implement these initiatives.

Al-Qasem concluded by emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the private sector “represented by hotels” and government institutions and civil society to develop innovative solutions to the challenge of food waste and to create a more sustainable, resilient environment capable of addressing future challenges.
